From the Field: John Baumann’s 50-Year Journey to FeldCare Connects

For nearly five decades, physical therapist John Baumann has built a career defined by experience, adaptability, and a commitment to continued learning. His journey has taken him through acute hospital care, private outpatient practice, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation leadership before he ultimately made home health the focus of his independent practice.

Today, John is a Gold Standing clinician, recognizing more than five years as an independent clinician in the FeldCare Connects network. After nearly 11 years of choosing FeldCare as a referral source, John reflects on the path that brought him here and the philosophy that continues to shape his practice.

A Career Built on Experience

John’s path into physical therapy began with an interest in fitness, movement, and the human body—an interest that grew into a desire for what he describes as “a broad scope and integrated practice.”

That philosophy would help shape the next 50 years of his career.

He began in acute hospital care, working with patients on gait training following surgery. From there, his career took him through private outpatient practice, skilled nursing, and acute rehabilitation, where he eventually became a Director of Rehabilitation.

Each setting added another dimension to the experience and clinical expertise John would later bring to home health.

Home health had already been part of John’s professional life on a PRN basis while he was directing rehabilitation programs. But in late 2015, an unexpected career change gave him the opportunity to pursue it more fully.

Turning Change Into Opportunity

When the facility John was directing brought on another clinician and his position ended, he chose to look at the situation differently.

“I found that as an opportunity, turned it into an opportunity,” John recalls.

As he explored opportunities in home health and connected with different organizations, FeldCare Connects came onto his radar.

What stood out wasn’t a pitch deck or benefits package. It was a 90-minute conversation with Randi.

“Probably in the first few minutes I realized that there was a lot in common,” John says. “I realized, hey, this was a good fit. And that was it. That was the turning point.”

That conversation in November 2015 began a professional relationship that is now approaching 11 years.

As an independent contractor, John was drawn to a model that gave him the flexibility to choose the referral opportunities that fit his practice. Through the FeldCare Connects network, John could accept or decline referral opportunities while remaining free to work with other agencies and pursue other professional opportunities as he chose.

“I found that as an opportunity, turned it into an opportunity.”

Continuing to Invest in His Practice

Nearly 11 years later, John continues to develop his skills and expand his approach to patient care. Recognizing that traditional home exercise programs alone didn’t always address the challenges he was seeing with his patients’ safety and mobility, John independently pursued specialized training to become a certified Tai Chi rehabilitation instructor. He attended live training from a Master Trainer sponsored by the Dr. Paul Lam Tai Chi for Health Institute. This allowed him to incorporate balance-focused movement and neuroplasticity concepts into his practice.

He has also continued investing in his professional development by taking home health specialization education which he continued through the APTA Home Health Section Academy Series to achieve Advanced Competency in Oasis-E Certificate and a 15-hour module course. This was followed by a 16-hour virtual training to achieve Certified Advanced Competency in Home Health.

Incorporating evidence-based practices and objective measurements into the cases he accepts, John describes the response he has seen when introducing Tai Chi-based neuroplasticity work to patients:

“My goal for each home health patient is skilled interventions to incorporate patient values, preferences, optimizing patient safety, satisfaction and quality of life. This means patient-centered, data driven, adhering to Conditions of Participation, the Social Determinants of Health, and The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health”

John’s continued education and evolving clinical approach reflect something that has characterized his entire career: a willingness to keep learning, adapting, and developing his expertise.

Supporting Independent Practice

What John values about the FeldCare network isn’t simply access to referral opportunities. He also points to the administrative infrastructure that supports his independent practice.

He describes CliniConnects and FeldCare’s streamlined invoicing process as significant improvements from the days when paperwork had to be printed, organized, and mailed.

The technology helps simplify the administrative side of receiving referrals and submitting invoices, while allowing John to focus his time on his own practice and the patients he chooses to serve.

And although much of the process is now digital, John still appreciates opportunities to stop by the FeldCare office and connect face-to-face with the team—a reminder, as he puts it, that even in an increasingly automated industry, “this human connection” still matters.

Five Decades—and Still Learning

Fifty years into his career, John Baumann’s practice hasn’t slowed down—it’s continued to evolve.

He continues learning, pursuing professional development, and bringing decades of experience to the patients he serves while maintaining the independence that has allowed him to shape his practice his way.

John’s journey represents what we value about the independent clinicians in the FeldCare Connects network: experienced professionals who bring their own expertise, invest in their professional growth, and independently choose the referral opportunities that fit their practice.

We’re proud to recognize John’s remarkable 50-year career and nearly 11-year relationship with the FeldCare Connects network.

Congratulations, John, and thank you for allowing FeldCare Connects to be part of your journey.
