Spotlighting the Value of PT for National Physical Therapy Month

Physical Therapy Month is celebrated every October, and this year’s theme is “The Value of PT.” Because FeldCare Connects is a network of freelance clinicians, including physical therapists, we wanted to share information about physical therapy and its value in celebration of this month.

What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy (PT) is a rehabilitation method that is used to help patients recover abilities, relieve pain, improve function, and prevent injury. Because PT has broad objectives, physical therapists use various evidence-based methods to achieve these goals.

Physical therapy may include exercises, massage, cold or heat therapy, and therapies that require specialized devices. Often, a physical therapist will use a combination of methods to help a patient during recovery.

Who can Benefit from Physical Therapy?

Patients of all ages and abilities can benefit from physical therapy. Often, physical therapy is prescribed for patients with:

  • Arthritis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Joint injury or disorder
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Orthopedic injury
  • Pain
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Pelvic floor issues
  • Post-surgical care
  • Repetitive stress injury
  • Respiratory illness
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Sports injuries
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Wound care
  • Vestibular dysfunction

The above is a short list of the many therapeutic uses of physical therapy. Studies have shown that patients receiving physical therapy services within two weeks of an injury had faster recovery times than those who did not receive PT. This fact alone shows the value of rehabilitation services when one is injured.
